How to figure out why your skylight is leaking
This is the time of year that we get calls from a variety of people that are experiencing problems with leaking skylights. The question that is frequently asked is why are my skylights leaking now, but did not leak from rains this last fall?
The answer is there could be a couple reasons why
The first question we ask, Have you noticed drips in the morning when there was no obvious moisture on your roof? If the answer is yes then the problem is condensation and the solution is to get a new skylight that is better designed. If the answer is no then we determine if the leak was experienced after a heavy snow or after a quick freeze-thaw cycle. If this is the case then we explain that this is caused by ice-damming. The best fix is to replace the flashing.
